Scholarships
The Virginia Chapter of APCO (VA APCO), is proud to support it’s members by offering several types of scholarship opportunities. Every year, the VA APCO Chapter will be supporting opportunities for members to grow in their career through conference attendance, instructional opportunities, and professional development. The categories and requirements are listed below.

VA APCO/NENA Fall Conference Scholarship
Would include registration and lodging for the VA APCO/NENA Fall Conference. Registration of $250 and 3-nights hotel (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights) typical conference rate of $150/night or less, plus $50 towards parking. Estimated cost of $750 per recipient.
Criteria for being selected:

First Time Conference Attendee

Recipient has not been awarded any type of Virginia APCO Scholarship within the last 3 years

Letter of Support from Training Manager/ECC Director

Winners will be announced at the Spring NENA/APCO Conference and will be used at that calendar year’s Fall Conference
3 awarded at $750 each, for total of $2,250 in this category.
VA APCO Instructional Scholarship
Scholarship to be given for any APCO Institute class (excluding RPL or CPE), either in person, virtual, or online. Average class cost of $250 to $550 depending on course selected.
Classes may include Communications Training Officer (CTO), Communications Center Supervisor (CCS), Public Safety Telecommunicator (PST), Fire Service Communications (FSC), Law Enforcement Communications (LEC), Instructor course for CTO, CCS, PST, FSC, or LEC, Customer Service, Active Shooter, Crisis Negotiations, and many others that are listed on the APCO site.
Criteria for being selected:

Recipient has not been awarded any type of Virginia APCO Scholarship within the last 3 years.

Letter of Support from Training Manager/ECC Director

Must use in the calendar year that it is awarded for.

Agency agreement that the agency is liable for repayment of the funds if the student does not complete the course successfully or leaves the agency prior to completing, unless they leave for another agency in the Virginia APCO Chapter.

Winners will be announced at the Fall Conference each year and will be valid for the calendar year following the conference.
Up to $2,000 awarded annually in this category.
VA APCO Professional Development Scholarship
Scholarship to be given for any APCO RPL or CPE course.
Criteria for being selected:

Recipient has not been awarded any type of Virginia APCO Scholarship within the last 3 years.

Training Manager/ECC Director letter of support

Must use within the calendar year that it is awarded for.

For CPE, the award will be valid for the next two cycles of CPE selection.

Agency agreement that the agency is liable for repayment of the funds if the student does not complete the course successfully or leaves the agency prior to completing, unless they leave for another agency in the Virginia APCO Chapter.

Winners will be announced at the Fall Conference each year and will be valid for the calendar year following the conference.
Up to $1,105 for a RPL course, $3,885 for CPE course, not to exceed $4,990 in this category, could be up to four (4) RPL Scholarships if no CPE requests.
Application Deadlines
Scholarships will be awarded for the calendar year following the award date. The award date will be at the business meeting of the Fall Conference each year. Scholarships will be good from January 1 to December 31 of the calendar year following the conference. (Example: Award given at Fall 2023 conference would be good for Jan 1 to Dec 31 of 2024.)

Scholarships shall be open each year beginning January 1st and will close on March 15th for awarding of the Fall Conference scholarships at the Spring Conference, held in May each year.
Scholarships for all other categories shall be open from April 1st and will close on September 1st for awarding of the additional scholarships at the Fall Conference, held in October each year.
